Cryotherapy – Awaken Clinic

As the largest organ of the body, the skin can succumb to a variety of benign lesions, marks and blemishes, the appearance of which can be aggravating, especially in highly visible areas of the face or body. Awaken Clinic in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, offers a simple, quick and comfortable, non-surgical treatment to remove benign skin lesions called Cryotherapy.

Cryotherapy works by effectively freezing minor skin lesions, such as milia, warts, skin tags and moles, causing them to fall off with no pain or downtime. In the past this was carried out using liquid nitrogen. However, we now have a more sophisticated, state of the art, hand-held device for a more precise treatment application.

FAQs

Is Cryotherapy safe?

Cryotherapy is a relatively low-risk procedure and is safe for all areas of the face and body, even the delicate skin around the eyes. The CryoIQ Derm Plus device delivers liquified N2O via a high-precision applicator tip directly to the targeted lesion, removing it in seconds and leaving the healthy surrounding tissue unharmed.

Am I suitable for a Cryotherapy treatment at Awaken Clinic?

Cryotherapy is considered safe for most patients who are medically fit and healthy. However, before we agree to carry out any treatment, we will ask that you attend a no-obligation consultation to confirm that there are no contraindications that may prevent or restrict your chosen treatment from going ahead.

How many treatments will I need?

In many cases, it may be possible to remove your skin lesion in one treatment. However, we will advise you on the estimated number of treatments that may be required in your initial consultation. It is generally recommended that any follow-up sessions are carried out after two to four weeks.

I have darker skin, will this work for me?

Cryotherapy will work on darker skin, however it is recommended that the protocols for dark skin are kept to short freezing cycles of three to six seconds at two-week intervals, to minimise the risk of hyper or hypopigmentation.

Are there any side effects associated with cryotherapy treatments?

It is generally considered that Cryotherapy treatments carry very few risks. However, on very rare occasions one or more of the following side effects may be experienced as a result of this treatment:

  • Temporary or permanent numbing of the skin in areas where the nerves lie close to the surface of the skin (fingers, wrists, behind the ears).
  • Changes in the skin’s pigment (hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation).
  • Damage to hair follicles, especially if treating lesions close to coarse terminal hair.
Does Cryotherapy hurt?

During your cryotherapy treatment you may experience a sensation similar to a ballpoint pen being pushed into your skin as the N2O reaches the base of the lesion. There can also be some residual stinging for a few minutes after your treatment. Occasionally, there may be some skin blistering, but this will subside in a few hours following the treatment. If you are particularly worried about discomfort we can apply a topical numbing cream to the area, prior to your treatment.

How long will results last?

Depending on the lesion being treated, the results from your cryotherapy treatment for minor skin lesions will usually be permanent. However, your expected results and the number of treatment sessions required for permanent removal of your skin lesions will be discussed in your initial consultation.
